IPO Side Event: “Digital Recovery Support, Stigma Reduction, and Rights-based Online Engagement”

As an NGO with Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC), the IPO uses this international platform to actively contribute to global dialogue and set strong priorities in the field of prevention and recovery. Together with the Italian anti-drug organization “Dico NO alla Droga”, it hosts the side event “Digital Recovery Support, Stigma Reduction, and Rights-based Online Engagement”. The title highlights the core objective of the discussion: digital platforms can play a powerful role in supporting individuals on their path to recovery from addiction, while ensuring the protection of fundamental rights and actively working to reduce stigma. The event brings together experts, authorities, NGOs, and stakeholders who are committed to developing innovative, human rights-based approaches and strengthening international cooperation in the field of recovery and prevention.
With this side event, the IPO aims to raise strong awareness that the digital world presents both significant opportunities and potential risks. Online support groups, video therapy sessions, and smartphone applications can provide accessible and location-independent support for individuals on their recovery journey. At the same time, it is essential to ensure the protection of data, privacy, and the dignity of all participants. The side event seeks to highlight best practices and encourage international dialogue on how digital support solutions can be developed responsibly, sustainably, and in a way that truly strengthens recovery and prevention efforts worldwide.
Leadership and International Cooperation

The IPO delegation is led by its founder and president, Prof. Dr. Ilija Životić. He already played an active role in the thematic discussions of the CND in 2025, strongly emphasizing the importance of preventive measures. The participation of the IPO in this year’s session once again highlights the organization’s strong commitment to fostering comprehensive international cooperation in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.
Through this side event and its participation in plenary discussions, the IPO aims to place an even stronger focus on prevention, education, and rehabilitation within international drug policy. The partnership with “Dico NO alla Droga” demonstrates that civil society organizations play a vital role in strengthening global prevention efforts.
Why Digital Recovery Matters
The number of people using digital tools for health and addiction recovery programs has increased significantly since the pandemic. Virtual support groups, relapse prevention apps, and online therapy services reduce geographical barriers and provide easier access to support. At the same time, there is still a strong need for reliable information: How can trustworthy services be identified? What data is being collected? How can stigma be reduced in the digital space? These important questions are at the core of the side event discussions.
